Dale DeArmond, another Alaskan artist, and I were invited to Nondalton, a little town near Lake Clark on the Alaska Peninsula, to sketch the legends of that region. We drew a number of other subjects as well, including "starring," a custom associated with the Russian Orthodox Christmas. A small boy carries the star, decorated with tinsel, crepe paper, and all sorts of interesting things, at the head of a procession. The celebrants stop and catol at each house in the village, after which the hosts serve hot chocolate and cookies, and make donations to the church.
